Nielsen has recently released their new data on the smartphone market and Android is still leading the pack. With 39% of the market share, Google’s Android operating system has a 11% lead over Apple’s iPhone OS.
With Blackberry decreasing in share, it is obvious that eventually this battle will strictly be between Android and Apple. Windows is trying to make a push in the mobile industry but it is hard to determine whether they can become a factor, and personally I do believe that it will be a 2 man (or phone) race.
This progression could simplify app development by streamlining focus to just the two major mobile operating systems. Do remember, although in the future the focus may just be on the Android and iPhone OS, each system is different and require unique strategies. The demographic for each system has it’s own characteristics and therefore this must be taken into consideration and play a large role during application development.
